Gary Johnson
Libertarian Party
Who is Gary Johnson?
By Kevin Hudson
Republicans and Democrats have been at war in the elections for centuries, but recently people have been in search for an alternative choice. This comes in the form of the third, and often neglected party called the Libertarians. The party was originally founded in 1971, but only in recent years has it received this much of an output of votes. With the 2016 season drawing to a close, more people have been going for Libertarian than ever. Multiple candidates have been selected to run for president as the Libertarian Party's candidate, but out of these candidates, one has gained the most support, none other than Gary Johnson.
Gary Earl Johnson, born January of 1953 is an author, businessman, and most prominently a politician. He was born in Minot, North Dakota as the first child of Earl and Lorraine Johnson. Gary was taught about diversity and the value of money at a young age, which he keeps with him today. Gary lived in a middle class neighborhood with his two parents, and two siblings, Scott and Lori. He became the governor of Mexico in 1995 and served until 2003 as a Republican leader. He was then replaced by Bill Richardson, who is the 30th governor of Mexico. In previous elections, third party candidates have not been able to gain the voter support they have now. Gary has pulled out a surprising ten percent in recent polls, and surpasses Jill Stein, another third party candidate.
With an uprise in votes, and a hesitation to vote for our Republican and Democratic candidates, it seems like Gary would be dominating the polls. Still, people often criticize him for his own problems. For example, his policies on immigration contrast from both Trump and Hillary’s views, many United States citizens agree that his temper can be a problem, and gun control is one of his larger issues.
Being a libertarian also comes with many problems in the race too. Libertarians support freedom and flexibility in the economy, a very controversial topic in the elections.
Gary Johnson may not be perfect, but his results in the polls show that he’s getting a lot of support, and for good reason. Many see him as a strong, independent leader, and if he does become president of our country as the first Libertarian candidate he will bring change and new interests all over America.
Johnson's campaign will be supported by a strong running mate, William Weld, who previously served as 68th governor of Massachusetts. With these odds stacked in his favor, it seems to many that Gary Johnson has the support and overall publicity to gain new undecided voters. So, whether you see him as a worthy candidate or not, only time will tell if this legislative Libertarian will take the White House.
